Always use a punch and do not hammer directly onto the plate.
To gain a good impression use a 2-4lb lump hammer and punch and use on a stump, anvil or on thin sheet of wood over a concrete floor.
Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as eye protection, face mask, arms covered, and leather apron. Regularly inspect steel tools and implements for wear and sharp edges.
Keep steel tools well oiled to prevent corrosion.
If you use excessive tonnage with mild steel, you will dent the die (particularly with small designs). Press slowly and check progress. This should produce good results with most metals.
Hardened steel can be brittle and may shatter under extreme stress.
